Mark’s Notes on Legal Topics of Interest

What should your employer do to protect you?

On behalf of Mark Knight Attorney at Law

When you go to work at your job in Kentucky, you receive specialized training and guidance as you prepare for your job responsibilities. A good portion of this training should be centered on ways that you can stay safe at work including how to respond in situations where you notice a hazard that needs to be dealt with. When your employer provides adequate instruction and frequently revisits safety protocols to monitor their effectiveness, you can be more confident about your ability to stay safe at work.

One thing that your employer can do is to perform inspections on a regular basis. These inspections should address areas where lack of attention could potentially create preventable risks for workers like you. Depending on the type of job you have and the industry you work in, these inspections can address job procedures, machinery repairs and maintenance, and the awareness of you and your colleagues regarding safety protocols.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration suggests several other actions that your employer can take to better protect you including the following:
• Updating safety policies as guidelines change or industry improvements are made.
• Giving you and your colleagues access to tools, machinery and equipment that is safe.
• Staying in compliance with regulations given by OSHA and other industry leaders.
• Providing you and your colleagues with a health program that promotes safety at work.

If you notice any violations of OSHA regulations in your place of work, you should immediately bring them to the attention of your supervisor. The information in this article is intended for educational purposes only and should not be taken as legal advice.
